What are the factors that can make acne worse?

The answer to this question is varied from one person to another as much overlap exists from one person to another in terms of acne triggers. In fact, it is amazing how different the triggers can be and how many triggers there are.

True to believe, many factors can lead to acne flares. For example, it could be just the change of seasons or moving from one state to another, from one home to another, from losing a loved one, from one job to another, from getting married or getting divorced, or a myriad of other psychologic issues and so on.

Nevertheless, below is a list of factors that play its role for causing an acne flare:

  • Squeezing or picking at blemishes
  • Irritation from hard scrubbing of our skin
  • Changing hormone levels in adolescent girls and adult women, usually 2 to 7 days before the menstrual period starts
  • Poor skin hygiene
  • Occlusive products that block the opening of the pores
  • Friction caused by leaning on or rubbing the skin
  • Pressure from backpacks, bike helmets or tight collars
  • Environmental irritants such as pollution and high humidity
